Tools Upgrade in Middle of Application Upgrade

...we're in the middle of an application upgrade 9.0/8.54.11 to 9.2/8.54.11.  We're past initial pass and two test moves. 

We'd like to now upgrade our tools from 8.54.11 to 8.55.11 so that we can implement Elastic Search.

Is there a recommended approach for this?  My thought is that the options are 1) to deploy as originally planned, to 9.2/8.54.11 (..using SES), then execute separate tools-only upgrade to 8.55.11  or 2) integrate tools upgrade into application upgrade and deploy with 9.2/8.55.11 (...using Elastic Search).
