Changing the Record Name for a tree

Good day,  we need to update the filter that is being used on an existing tree.   I've managed to create a new record , a view, and associate it with the Tree Structure on the Details page.  This allows me to select the new item, however when I add it to the tree it gives me the error,

The detail value for the leaf you're trying to insert isn't in the user table.  To define it right now, click Yes; otherwise click No and the leaf will not be inserted.

We did create a new record name instead of modifying the existing record name.
