Peoplecode Function - TopRowNumber

Is there a known performance issue with the function TopRowNumber? We are on tools 8.54.30

Issue is that using this function when the search results are about 300-500 works fine without issue. However, we have cases where search results are more than 3000 (we have to show all of them in a grid) and then, performance issue occurs.
