ElasticSearch Indexes

We are implementing Elasticsearch and have been asked by our DBAs to provide Indexes to implement.  I have searched and cannot seem to find a best practice or examples of the best way to do this.  I found the PeopleBooks and at a high level it makes sense but it would be great to understand how others may be doing this and creating/defining custom indexes.  Anyone?
