Is value required for open item key when turned on for an account, or can it be left blank ? and, is

There is requirement that for AR unbilled accrued account , open item key is being considered to be customer ID. But there is a scenario anticipated where there may not be the value for open item key. Is it possible? If not, is there a work around?
