Can we create real xlsx files using BI Publisher? If so, how?

Hello Community!

I need to create an interface to a new 3rd party system.  That system has a pre-built/delivered inbound interface which accepts Excel (xlsx) files in a particular format.  My question is, can I create a true XLSX file in PeopleSoft?  (And by "true", I mean not a comma delimited text files with a ".xls" extension.)

If it can be done, I imagine it would be done with BI Publisher.  I found an Oracle Doc ID which talks about this a little but only at a very high level:  (E-BI/XMLP: Are Excel Templates Supported By PeopleTools Implementation of BI Publisher Now or In Future? (
