Has "best practice" for DMO been changed with the introduction of PUM?

Should you still have a DMO environment in your migration/upgrade stream that matches the PRD installation for PT and app versions, or is PUM supposed to fulfill that function now?  I would think you'd still want a DMO environment, since PUM continues to get Images and never really matches your PRD environment anymore.

The reason I ask is that I have inherited a system which is a little ... unique compared to past implementations, and I am trying to determine if this is the new normal, or if I need to help them get back to best practices.
