Are there any limitations on the trees that can be attached to a pivot grid field?

I have a pivot grid that works when I attach our program tree. If I instead attach our department tree, the pivot grid spins and never loads.   The program tree is the larger of the 2 tress so it's not a factor of the number of node & leaves in the tree.
