Is there a way to update work item "work type" from Automatic to Manual ?

We have a change in business requirement to send emails manually, right now the work item is setup as Automatic with Category Send Email. Is there a way to directly update this to manual ? Also, would like to know what happens to already open work items when the Strategy Fulfilment Mailer is run ?
