Purge request not working to rectify the data growth issue

Hi All,

We are facing data growth issue & running "Purge Obsolete Workflow Runtime Data" but it’s not purging. And with the ref of note 752383.1; Workflow item must be CLOSED. But confusion is that what should we do if item(s) is OPEN. Is there any step(s) to Close or what next to get the objective?
