The lookup windows does not appear when the lookup button / Magnifying glass is clicked

Tools Version - 8.51.16. MS SQl server 2005

This symptom is seen application wide. Nothing happens when a lookup button is clicked. The processing icon appears and it keeps rotating. e.g trying to look for a role on user profile page has this behavior...And this is same for other components / pages....Please suggest..
