Journal Approval Workflow - Different status's

I am looking into implementing Journal Approval Workflow.   Peoplebooks is a bit vague.   I don't understand what the 'Pushback' button is used for and the 'Hold' button.  When would you want to do either one  ?   I 'think' the Pushback is if you have many approvers and want the approval to go to the previous approver , is that correct ?  but wouldn't apply if you only had one set of approvers ?   The 'Hold' I don't know either.   Thanks in advance.
