AD User Recon taking 10+ hours

Is there a way to speed up the target recon process?  We are reconciling around 5k users, but the scheduled job is taking around 10+ hours to run then we are encountering the following error:

org.identityconnectors.framework.common.exceptions.ConnectorException: The server does not support the requested critical extension
