Modify workflow notification message

I have the need to send a FYI notification to an employee if they have been promoted to a specific job. The notification needs to have an outside URL link in it so the employee can link to the external sire and fill out some required paperwork. I have tried creating an attribute that is type URL, and it embeds the link, however the link doesn't work because it is appended to the end of the existing URL in the browser.
