Best way to monitor PeopleSoft services.

We are on PeopleTools 8.54,8.55 and 8.56. What is the best way to monitor PeopleSoft services like Process Schedulr, App and Web servers without using any monitoring tools like OEM etc. Do we have any free monitoring tools to use? Even the unix scripting will work. Thank you.
