Enable alternate accounts on existing COA

Could you please tell me if we can enable alternate accounts on existing COA? If yes, what are the impacts on the transactions that already exist in the system. will we need to populate historic transactions with alternate accounts or only on future transactions? What is the best strategy to enable the alternate account without impacting day to day transactions in the system? Also how does enabling alternate account impacts the sub-ledgers like AP, FA etc?
