Configure Process scheduler in Change Assistant during PUM Maintenance

when applying a large PUM maintenance package that includes "all updates not applied " ,do we have to mandatorily configure Process scheduler for Target Database or is it just optional step? the reason i ask it because i was able to execute all package steps earlier like Conversion AE,DataMigration steps on change assistant client earlier for small packages with out any issues . Will it be any different here for bigger packages like aove . we can configure but wanted to know how it will be useful if anyone has experience or this step is  only for upgrade (like 9.1 to 9.2 etc)
