Seperate Physical Web and App Servers vs. Combined?

We have always had separate Physical Web and App Servers. We are now considering combining them on 1 physical server. For our external (off network) users we have a separate servers from the internal ones. Does anyone have any helpful information about the pro's or con's or issues there may be with having them combined?
