Component Search versus Elastic Search - Wildcards

Can someone please explain to me (a hopelessly functional person) why Component Search doesn't need a wild card to search but Elastic Search does?  Users are a bit confused trying to search the Company Directory in HR and even though the fields are set to 'Contains Phrase' you still need a wild card to get any results.
