BI Publisher Template Character Spacing Issue with Word 2016?

Has anyone received the situation with a PeopleSoft BI Publisher RTF template where the values from the template field show in the output with a space in between each letter?

Example:  V E N D O R.

I am trying to modify a check BI Publisher template with Word 2016.  However, when I open the template, there are spaces on some of the fields.  However, if I open with Word 2010, no spaces exist on the field name.  The extra spaces on the template are causing the output to print words with spaces in between.

Word 2016 (Template when opened):

Name1 , Name2, Address Line 1
