Element Name in Document Builder Does not Allow Punctuation

We are creating a REST Web Service (GET method) with a Document Type Message.  This service operation is being published to a third-party that requires the element name to contain a period.

When creating the document with the Element Name assigned_to.user_name in PeopleTools>Documents>Document Builder, we are getting the error message,'Invalid name. Do not use punctuation, spaces, nor start with the letters XMLor digits'.  

Is there a workaround that can be applied?


We are on PeopleTools 8.56.12.
