Upgrade ODA database 12.1.0.2 to 12.2.0.1 with Dataguard

I am trying to upgrade my database on an Oracle Data Appliance (ODA) X7 from 12.1.0.2 to 12.2.0.1.  Upgrading the primary database is very straight forward and I have had no issues in my test environment upgrading the primary database.  I have been unsuccessful in upgrading the standby database to 12.2.0.1.  has anyone accomplished this task and if they have, please share.
