Lag between processes within job

Is it typical to have a lag time between processes within a job? I expected the processes to run back to back, with no lag. This is not the case in some of our jobs that run. For example, see the timings for the RECV_DEL job below. There was a 12 second lag between PO_RECVDELV and POX5030, and a 22 second lag between POX5030 and PO_RECVDELV2. This is really hurting the performance of our jobs. Is there anything that can be done to improve this?
