AR_BNKSTMT with blank reference value

The bank statement does not load reference information.  When I run the Bank Recon (FSPRECON) process or Recon and Bank Statement (RCNBSP) job, the rows in question change from an 'Unreconciled' status to a 'Null Transaction ID Ref'.  If I manually enter a reference and rerun the process, the status changes to to 'Not Found in System' and the Deposit is created if I run the Recon and Bank Statement (RCNBSP) job.          

If the bank can't send us reference information, how can I get around this without manually typing in a reference for each transaction?       

We are version 9.2 post PUM 18.
