Inconsistent behaviour setting record.field.value since upgrade to PT8.57

I have just raised the following as an SR with Oracle, but am cross-posting here in the hope that someone may have some thoughts on an issue we are facing:

Since upgrading to PeopleTools 8.57.06 we are experiencing inconsistent behaviour with custom AWE Event Handler PeopleCode within the Fluid Forms component (EOFM_FORM_FL). The issue can only be recreated with our custom code but it does behave differently between 8.56 and 8.57, hence raising this SR. Our code is in a custom AWE Event Handler running from the OnStepComplete method which calls the following custom method, passing in a different &status for each stage of the approval:
