How to authenticate solaris users against active directory

I suppose this is more a question of my understanding than a specific issue, but here goes.

I was asked to assist a number of colleagues who had been tasked with setting up Solaris authentication via Microsoft AD, their starting point was a document from 2012 which I dismissed as being too old.
