Cleaning Worklists of Terminated employees

When an employee is terminated, they leave behind worklist entries. I can use the monitor worklist to re-route any pending approvals, but they never "Mark Work" Transaction Approved or Transaction denied. Over the last years since 2008 we have accumulated 38,000 transaction approved notifications sitting in worklists of terminated employees. I found Doc ID 1947890.1 which talks about deleting these rows. But is that neccessary? Why not just script PSWORKLIST.INSTATUS = 2 for these entries? In essence change the status to Worked?  WHat is the best way to clean these up? Or is there a need to?
