Purge App Server Cache without domain shutdown

I've been sure for a long time that it is possible to purge app server cache using PSADMIN without the domain being shut down. I was convinced I've done this at previous places, but I've been unable to find any mention of this in any documentation, and not mention in MOS or Google either. If it wasn't for a colleague thinking he'd seen this behaviour too I would have been convinced I was going mad because all of our environments gave the "domain will be shutdown..." warning when purging cache.

And then recently we noticed that we are able to purge app server cache in one of our environments without bringing the domain down!
