When adding Variable Criteria to nVision reports, why would I receive 'Error' as the output?

I noticed that some of our nVision reports are utilizing the %BUN% variable criteria to pull down the Business Unit Description, but when the report runs, the variable turns into 'Error'.  The report has a scope behind it and we are able to pull in other scope variable without issue.  What would we be missing?
