fate of previously instantiated workflow after changes

Hi

Would anyone be able to assist me with my query:

We already have a number of instances of a custom workflow in the system which are in progress, perhaps waiting for user response.

I am planning to modify the WF - add an activity to a process, and also modify the custom package (only new functions will be added, so previous workflow instances not supposed to be affected because of package change).

My intention is for only new processes to be affected by this change.

1)If I upload the modified Workflow using WFLOAD - would instances of Workflow already in the system be affected anyway (or they will continue using the previous version).
