Is it possible to upgrade our Java release without upgrading PeopleTools?

We currently use Java 1.8.162 and are being required to upgrade to at least 1.8.231.  We are on PeopleTools 8.56.09.  Is it possible to upgrade our Java release without a PeopleTools upgrade?
