Is there a way to expand a tabbed classic grid by default?

We have a classic page with a classic grid, and have added tab separators.  We would like for the entire grid to be visible when the page opens, with the user having the ability to collapse it into the tabs.  The default is the opposite - the tabs are presented, and the user can expand them if desired.  It really seems like there should be a grid property or PeopleCode method/property of the grid class that we could use to force the tabs to open as the default.  But after much searching in PeopleBooks, MOS and the internet I've come
