Alternatives to Node Based Authentication for 8.5x to 8.5x Integrations

For many Tools releases I have configured PeopleSoft to PeopleSoft PSCAMA based Message integrations with password-based Node Authentication. However, I recently came across this recommendation "Use node-level security for integrations with nodes running on earlier PeopleTools 8.4x releases" in this PeopleBook:

        PeopleSoft PeopleTools 8.53 -> PeopleSoft Integration Broker Administration -> Understanding Securing Integration Environments

What alternatives are there for securing PeopleSoft to PeopleSoft 8.5x integrations?

There is a lot of information on this Information Center, but I see nothing related to the problem. That is, if PeopleBooks indicates Node Autentication should be used for 8.4x to 8.4x integrations, how should 8.5x to 8.5x integrations be secured?
