Dozens of undismisssable Announcements

I have loads of announcements which appear in my "Following" stream - all of categories I am not following at all. I can't dismiss them, I can't get rid of them.

The actual content I am following is about 2 full screen-scrolls down which is a pain in terms of usability to say the least.
