For PeopleTools Only upgrade 8.49 to 8.56 (HRMS 8.8 application) non-unicode to Unicode required?

We are in the process of upgrading PeopleTools to 8.49 to 8.56 along with Oracle and AIX upgrade. Our application is HRMS 8.8 and we are not upgrading application. It is a multi step upgrade.

Our system is on-unicode and would like to remain that way if possible.

Step 1: Upgrade PeopleTools 8.49 to 8.55 --> Completed on AIX 7.2 (upgraded AIX 6.1 to 7.2)

Step 2: Upgrade Oracle 11.2.0.4 to 18c --> Complete (non-unicode) - did not convert to unicode

Step 3: Upgrade PepleTools 8.55 to 8.56

Questions:

(1) Since we are not upgrading HRMS 8.8 application and it is only PeopleTools upgrade, is it required to convert Oracle from non-unicode to unicode? Based on our understanding the PUM images are only available in Unicode. Because of this we are wondering what should we do? Can we convert or not convert to unicode?
