Is there a way in Tree Manager API (or some other known way) to save a tree without going through the whole audit process?

I know if I save a tree using the API in draft mode, I can go in and manually save the tree in tree manager. The manual save does not seem to lock two peopletools tables: pslock and psversion. I would love to do the manual save in a program, so someone doesn't have to manually do it every day.
