Can a tools 8.56+ environment use IB with a 8.55- environment?

I have a 8.58 environment and I'm trying to send messages to a 8.53 environment. I can ping the nodes successfully but I get an error message 'PSFT Authentication token failed for Node PSFT_HR. (158,454)'.
