Need help troubleshooting integration broker error: Integration Gateway: Password is either missing

in PeopleTools and Lifecycle Management - PSFT (MOSC) 6 commentsAnswered ✓
We have little expertise in setting up integration broker communication. We cloned the integration setup objects from an existing, working configuration. In the Routing - Connector Properties - we changed the ConnectorID from HTTPTARGET to FILEOUTPUT. 
When calling SyncRequestXmlDoc from Peoplecode, we get this error:
Integration Gateway: Password is either missing or invalid. (158,10633) FMX_FUNCLIB_SHP.SHIP_TRANSPORT_PB.FieldChange  PCPC:26927  Statement:363
The password must be re-entered

We have tried numerous changes and troubleshooting, but nothing works.  Can you provide a list of different things that may cause the error above?
