customize Fluid delivered home pages or copy them and customize copied version?

Is it best practice to copy delivered Fluid home pages and customize them to display to employees or to customize the delivered Fluid home pages? I am not sure if updates/upgrades will overwrite the customizations on delivered home pages or not. Thanks for the advice. Tracie
