How does RMS and ReSA handle customer order when it is returned with NO INVENTORY STATUS.

Customer order is created and shipped and received to the customer. Now a customer calls the service and requests for return as the item is damaged. It will be a return scenario with No inventory, Would like to know how RMS handles and how the inventory adjustment is done. Whether automatically or manually. Please provide any POC on the complete order journey,
