How do I dynamically hide steps in an Activity Guide?

We are working on an Activity Guide and would like to hide steps based on certain criteria. We were looking at the Hide Steps field on the Activity Guide template, but we are not sure how it works. We looked for a delivered Activity Guide, to use as a reference, that has that field marked Yes but could not find any. We have reviewed PeopleBooks, but the documentation on that field was almost nonexistent. We are on PUM 43 PeopleTools 8.59.11. Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
