IDM SPB - database dependancy

Reviewing the IDM SPB (Identity Management StackPatchBundle) of January 2023 for our OID 12.2.1.4 environment, I'm having the below question:

Tool "spbat.sh" manages the installation (on Linux at least), and it says to "backup the database" before running the DOWNTIME option in SPBAT.sh ...

.. but, it doesn't clearly state if spbat.sh requires the database to be up or not. It says all IDM middleware processes to be down (because that script doesn't do that), but only with the statement to "make a backup" of the database, that doesn't say whether or not the database must be up or down, DURING running of the spbat.sh tool (with "downtime" option).
