How to check the required check box in child element of a custom document?

I am unable to check the required check box in child element of a custom document in PeopleSoft. It's greyed out. When I raised an SR on this, Oracle responded that the document is auto generated and one should not be able to change the document if its been auto generated and on another note Oracle suggested that the developer really should build out the document by hand as the document created via auto generation is not the most efficient. So we have to create the document from scratch manually which is a tedious task as the document is huge.
