Fluid Attachments to store on a Server location

Fluid Attachments utilizes the App Package: HR_ATTACHMENTS, which is at core built around record://HR_ATT_FILES_DD. Does that mean we will have Fluid attachments always be stored at DB Level. Have any one configured or thought about a feasibility of storing the Fluid attachments on a server location rather than database level.
