Forward DNS has stopped working on my DNS server, but reverse lookup works
OS: Solaris 10 running on a Sun Sunblade 2500. I know -- really old.
It's been sitting there working for years. It's our primary DNS server. We use 'enis' to edit the IP/name file, and 'mnis' to push the changes, I assume to NIS. I know the system is very sensitive to duplicate hostnames in the IP file.
'mnis' stopped working. Our file is very large so I spend an hour going over it in minute detail, and removed a couple of duplicates. Then 'mnis' works and pushes that hosts file, but nslookup can no longer query the local system by name. For example, if I type 'nslookup' STE-DC1, it fails with a SERVFAIL error. If I type nslookup '192.xxx.59.180', (full IP used but not typed here), it says 180.59.xxx.192.in-addr.arpo name = ste-dc1.(fqdn not listed here).
