What exactly does the "Use Server Certs" do?

Using weblogic 12.2.1.4

So I'm poking around the SSL settings again (I have it configured) because I'm tring to get UMS to work via SSL. I turn on hostname verification(because it was off) but then there's "Use Server Certs". I've never thought about it when I configured our SSL but its unchecked and the documentation on it is unhelpful.

Does it mean "Use the host server(a linux VM) certs when making outbound connections" or does it mean "Use the configured SSL that's in the section above on this weblogic server to do it?" And if the latter… why has the SSL been working with it unchecked?
