User is trying to deactivate non-master default obsolete BOMs in NetSuite, but they’re encountering an error that prevents you from doing so. Specifically, when you attempt to update these BOMs using a CSV import, you receive the message "Cannot update legacy BOM." This error indicates that legacy BOMs in NetSuite have restrictions that block direct updates to their status (e.g., setting them to inactive) via CSV import. The issue arises because these BOMs are still associated with assembly items, and NetSuite doesn’t allow such updates until those associations are removed.
Solution
To successfully deactivate these legacy BOMs, you need to follow a two-step process. First, remove the legacy BOM from any associated assembly items, and then update the BOM status via CSV import. Here’s how to do it:
Step 1: Remove the Legacy BOM from Associated Assembly Items
- Navigate to the assembly item: Open the assembly item that is linked to the legacy BOM you want to deactivate.
- Edit the item: Click "Edit" to modify the assembly item.
- Remove the legacy BOM: Go to the "Bill of Materials" section, locate the legacy BOM in the list, and remove it.
- Save changes: Click "Save" to update the assembly item. This disassociates the legacy BOM from the item.
Step 2: Update the BOM via CSV Import
- Prepare the CSV file: Create a CSV file with the following columns:
- Internal ID: The unique internal ID of the BOM you want to deactivate.
- Inactive: Set this to 't' (for "true") to mark the BOM as inactive.
- Run the CSV import: Use NetSuite’s CSV import tool to upload the file.
- Verify success: The import should now complete without errors, and the BOM will be deactivated.
The "Cannot update legacy BOM" error occurs because legacy BOMs cannot be modified directly via CSV import while they are still tied to assembly items. By removing the BOM from the assembly items first, you eliminate this restriction. Once the association is cleared, NetSuite allows the CSV import to update the BOM’s status to inactive.
