Per visual — you can control the overall Blending behavior. Since blending is not really the same as a join — it doesn't support pure join semantics.
Understand Blending in the docsYou can change the blending on each visual via the properties.

This feature could work if it was enabled for subject areas. This appears to be an option only for datasets. My use case is with a dataset and a subject area.
