OBIEE 12c - possible to have multiple web catalog directories?

Hi, in OBIEE 11g I could flip back and forth between (for example) our own RPD and web catalog, and the sample app RPD and catalog, simply by:

1. Uploading the proper RPD using EM

2. Repointing the web catalog directory on the "Deployment / Repository" tab of EM

The deployment / repository tab no longer lives under EM...is it still possible to flip to a different web catalog?

Thanks,

Scott

Not in OBIEE 12c, no. Everything is wrapped up in this concept of a service instance. If you want to deploy a different catalog you'd need to do so from another BAR file. Or, use .catalog archive/unarchive if it's just segments that you want to change.

Ok, thanks Robin, that's what I was afraid of. Can definitely work with just using archive / unarchive for now, was hoping for something faster / easier, but it should work.

Can't wait until Oracle finally allows multiple service instances...wonder how far off that is.

    Thanks!

Scott, out of interest, what's your use-case here?

Hi Robin, sorry didn't see your question until now. Use case is pretty dumb...Oracle doesn't seem to like to work on SRs unless you can reproduce a use case using their sample data...so when possible I like to keep the sample app around, just so I can reproduce issues and spur Oracle to get to work

Easiest to do that on the same platform / version we're on, so I try to do that on our real servers vs. a VM or something.

    Thx,

    Scott

So for that I'd just use exportServiceInstance/importServiceInstance to switch back and forth between your deployment and the SR one.

    Hi Scott,

Are those very specific problems which you can't reproduce on the publicly available instances? Just wondering whether the whol eeffort is worht is compared to public instances / "just a VM".

Hi Christian, no, those are issues which are easy to create on "public instances"...I just didn't realize any public instances are available? If so, that may save me considerable time. Right now working on a pie chart issue that I'm surprised everyone hasn't rebelled because of how badly they are broken (then again, maybe most people take Stephen Few's advice to heart and choose not to use pie charts...)

Robin, thanks for the info. New to OBIEE 12c (and with no training, and no box yet to run it on other than a very small VM on my laptop), so I don't know yet about importServiceInstance / exportServiceInstance. Something I'll check out when we finally get an environment stood up...

    Thanks,

    Scott

  • Hi Scott,

If it's for front-end things you can use one of the online SampleApp 607, like http://slc02oks.oracle.com:7780/analytics/saw.dll?bieehome&nqUser=Prodney&nqPassword=Admin123

They aren't always on but good for quickly test something (and validate it's not just your install having issues).

At a VM level you can download a local copy of SampleApp 607 but it's not the smallest image (as it has tons of content inside).

Last but not least ... docker? (you can easily get a new OBIEE 12c environment up and running in minutes and take less resources than full VMs).

And yes .... pie charts .... avoid that

Gianni the night owl beat me to it but here's a second 12.2.1.1:

And hoping you're not on 12.2.1.0 but still:
