Is OBIEE all in one for ETL, Cubes Development n BI Reporting?
Hi folks
Sorry to mess you up with a so basic question but I m moving from Microsoft BI stack.
I have to do some initial study for Oracle BI tools on youtube but it has confused me.
Though I have come to know that ODI is for ELT (alternate of SSIS), OWB is for Cubes Development (alternate of SSAS)
and BI publisher for BI reporting (in place of Power BI).
But I m confused about OBIEE, is it one suite of products for all above tasks or is is it only for reports n dashboards? If so then what's the purpose of BI publisher?
And lastly, what is Fusion Middleware suite for? Is it also needed to be installed to develop a Data Warehouse?
I have gone through initial documentation on Oracle website but it is so abstract that it has confused me.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks a lot Asim for listening me and your reply. It has connected at least one missing link i.e BI Publisher is the part of OBIEE suite and OBIEE is used to create dashboards.
Therefore may I conclude that OBIEE can be used for interactive reports and dashboards generation,
and a Data Warehouse can also be source of those reports (just like we can build reports in SSRS or Power BI using SSAS (Data Warehouse Cubes) as data source?
Meanwhile, I've gone through another lecture on ODI and I've come to know that it is the ELT tool.
So, what tool should I use for Cubes development? either ODI or OWB?

Oracle database supports OLAP, but if you want the best look into Essbase.

Hi,
I guess you can just ignore OWB (Oracle Warehouse Builder) and stay on ODI for all the ELT things (building a cube is a loading operation in the end).
As Robert said, for cubes (real cubes) you have Essbase which is one of the references for ages now.
Do not really always try to find a perfect match between a Microsoft tool and an Oracle tool.
To make it simpler think at BI Publisher as the "pixel perfect reports" tool. OBIEE is difficult to define as it embed many pieces: you have Publisher inside as you said, and you have the more interactive and analytical part with Answers (dashboards, analysis etc.) and Visual Analyzer (aka Data Visualization) for a more "self-service" kind of experience.
For the sources of data you can just think that almost anything can be used as source as long as it as some drivers allowing to connect. Of course most of the time you have a data warehouse as main source, but cubes, XML files etc. also works fine.
You maybe want to get your hands on SampleApp 607 (OBIEE Samples ) which is a simple way to see most of these things all in one place with tons of example.

Thank you so much Robert and Gianni
Many things are clear now.
Actually I'm try to figure out my tools and preparing toolkit for my Data Warehousing and BI move to Oracle and ultimately which tools I'll have to learn for this move.
A few more annoying things for you after above information:
I've a fair knowledge of Oracle SQL. And I'm seeing some SET functions there e.g Grouping, Roll Up, Cube etc. Therefore, should I use these functions ( as an alternate to MDX which is very compact and efficient language to query the Cubes in SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS)) to query and manipulate Sets of data in my DW tables?
I am trying to download a Master Data Management tool from Oracle but after searching at it's website, it has shown so many options that I couldn't decide which is exactly for MDM purposes?

MDM
EDW
OLAP
OBIEE
are all distinct disciplines ... seems like you are biting off quite a bit in one chunk. will be very hard for you to account for all the details
OBIEE does the querying for you based on the model you built. I also work in Microsoft BI - while the principles are the same - the implementation between Oracle and Microsoft is extremely different (getting closer in the cloud technologies). OBIEE has a semantic layer (RPD) -- foreign concept in Microsoft. Don't get wrapped up trying to compare them - you'll do yourself more 'harm'.

Hi Thomas
Thanks for the reply
You are correct...I started BI n DW work with Microsoft (SSIS, SSAS, SSRS/Power BI) and as most of these tools are accessible from a single IDE: SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT), that's why I was looking alternates tool by tool to prepare my BI toolkit eventually.
And I was getting confused after exploring the Oracle Products pages where heaps of products appearing for the same purpose.
Other purpose for such a basic question was also to make it useful for other new bees like me to show them a straight forward way for starting the work.

I get it ... what IS common between the two is the absolute requirement of sound data model skill and implementation. Both tools, even though they approach BI very differently, rely on solid data models. When I was making a move to add Microsoft it was hinted the models weren't that important - hogwash. Flat out false. The principles STILL apply.

Here are my 2 cents:
OBIEE --> This tool is more where only Metadata is stored and data is not at all stored in OBIEE. OBIEE fetches data from different sources like Flat Files, Database (OLTP) or Essbase Cubes (MOLAP). You can do Canned or ADHOC reporting in the OBIEE, you can do visualizations in the OBIEE, in one single dashboard you can connect display data from Multiple sources.
ETL --> Please refer to this page about ETL Tools
https://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14223/ettover.htm#i1006202
One of the MDM tool that is good to use is DRM, please see the below post for more information
Comparing MDM Products: Oracle Hyperion Data Relationship Management vs. Competitors
Hope this helps.

Precisely. Models are key. Be it on-write or on-read.

Thank you Gurus
I think this question has produced enough knowledge for Newbees like me to get start with Oracle BI tools.
If I've understood the above discussion correctly, the pathway for Oracle based BI development is:
- Create Data Warehouse based data model in Oracle Database
- Do the ETL (if needed, and practically it is really needed) using ODI
- Generate presentation layer using OBIEE

Just to make one thing clear:
If you are talking about pure OBIEE, then steps 1 and 2 are optional because OBIEE can analyze anything. You wouldn't for example put your data from Essabse cubes into a DWH again. Or from a Hadoop source etc.
Your question was extremely generic so the answers were generic. You can't take them and consider them an absolute and inviolte truth that is to be followed in absolute and all the time.

Not if you are doing Transactional Business Intelligence ....
